November 25th reminds us of courageous women
The date of the International Day against Violence against Women goes back to the Mirabal sisters.
They were part of the “June 14th Movement” in public against the then dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, which is why they were kidnapped and tortured by the secret service.

On November 25, 1960, the secret service killed the three women after months of torture.

Why the color orange?
Prominent buildings around the world shine in orange light on November 25th, and awareness campaigns are in orange.

“Orange Day” stands for a positive future and the hope for a life free of violence.

It has been creating since 1991 UN Women Attention to facts and figures on gender-based violence against women and girls.
Is violence against women still a problem in Germany?
When it comes to discrimination and violence against women, we quickly look abroad. But there is also a lack of attention in Germany.
Every 45 minutes A woman in Germany is dangerously physically injured by her partner.
Every third day a man kills his (ex) partner.

Violence has many manifestations
Violence is often linked to beatings, rape and murder against women.
However, violence against women begins much earlier with misogynistic language, jokes and insults.
If women avoid certain places, paths or situations, this is also a form of violence - their personal freedom is restricted because of their gender.
Insults, harassment, threats and control should also be called out for what they are: violence.

The Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth counts the following forms of violence with us:
Domestic violence, sexual harassment at work, sexual violence, digital violence, stalking, bullying, violence in the name of “honor”, forced marriage, genital mutilation and human trafficking.

Violence can affect women from all social classes, age groups and in every situation:
At home, in public, at work or online.

Misogyny is deeply rooted in society
The fact that forms of violence are dismissed as harmless or completely overlooked is due to deeply rooted social beliefs.

Men have to take action
Violence against women is a shameful topic in what is supposedly a private environment.

There are also stories about the stranger who jumps out of the bushes in the park at night - a false idea of violence against women, but one that is widespread. Statistically speaking, one's own (ex) partner is the most dangerous for women.
Men, too, and especially men, must show solidarity with women affected by violence and work against all forms of gender-specific violence.
