HIPPY stands for Home Interaction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters and, loosely translated, means “home visit program for parents with preschool children”. The home visit program is aimed at parents with 4 to 6 year old children of preschool age, especially for families with a migration background.
HIPPY It builds on the resources and skills of the participating parents, strengthens the parent-child relationship, and promotes the children's cognitive and social skills. HIPPY encourages and supports parents and children in learning the German language. The intercultural family language and education program lasts two years and takes place primarily within the family.
Each week, families are provided with a package of play and learning materials and instructed in their use. This task is carried out by a home visitor who comes from the family's cultural background. Once the parents are familiar with the play and learning materials, they practice them with their children at home. To carry out all activities, it is beneficial to play and learn together with the children for approximately 15-20 minutes five times a week. The results are discussed between parents and home visitor over the following week. The work is supplemented by twice-monthly group meetings with all program participants, the project coordinator, and the home visitors.
HIPPY is supported by the Diakonisches Werk of the Promigration department in the districts of Bemerode, Döhren, Linden Nord, Mittelfeld, Mühlenberg and Sahlkamp offered and carried out.
