Domestic violence and its impact on children and young people

Flyer Dad hit mom again

fact is that
– Violence between parents (or other caregivers) is a highly damaging experience of violence for children who witness it.
– Children in this situation need independent support in coping with the experiences.

With this flyer, the Hanoverian intervention program HAIP wants to sharpen awareness of this problem in child and youth welfare institutions and in schools.
In addition, professionals should be encouraged to provide qualified support for the children affected.

What is domestic violence?
Domestic violence includes all acts of physical, sexual, psychological or economic violence that occur within the family, the household or between former or current spouses or partners, regardless of the crime scene and whereabouts.

There are different forms of violence:
– psychological violence
– physical violence
– economic violence
– sexual violence
– Control social contacts, social media & mobile phones
- Stalking

Examples are:
– Humiliating, insulting and “putting down”
– hitting, pushing, choking
- lock up
- rape
– Prevention of professional practice and – self-employment
– Exploiting financial dependencies or withholding money

This violence comes mostly from men and has its causes, among other things, in traditional role models of men and women. The exercise of
Power and control, which is also reflected in a permanent disregard for the boundaries of the other.

How are the children and young people doing?
Witnessing intimate partner violence is a form of violence against children.

Experiencing this is a significant burden for boys and girls and has serious consequences for their psychological and physical development. This applies in particular for infants and toddlers. In addition, experiencing violence in the family has an impact on one's own attitude towards violence and one's own violent behaviour.

Girls and boys living in families where domestic violence occurs are affected in a variety of ways. They are eyewitnesses and ears of the conflict, grow up in a dangerous climate of psychological and physical violence and are sometimes directly involved in violent acts between their parents.

They are often victims of mistreatment, neglect or sexual abuse themselves.

Acts of violence between parents are always a stressful, sometimes traumatizing experience for children.

Consequences of this can be:
- Sleep disturbances and bed wetting
-
school difficulties
-
anxiety
-
aggressive behavior and rule violations
-
social withdrawal
-
passivity
-
sadness
-
Loyalty conflicts towards parents
-
post-traumatic stress disorder
-
Parentification / Accountability
